NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- An internal investigation reveals a New Britain police captain was having sex on duty, but he's still getting money from the city. That's because he retired before his conduct was brought to light.

"I can't believe what I'm reading," said Leslie Robinson. "I'm speechless."

Robinson, a hard working mother of two, wanted to know more about what investigators found in the 75-page Internal Affairs report regarding the former New Britain Police Chief's on-duty sexual encounters.

The allegations came to light last August. In the report, one of the women says, "Tony said it was okay and we had (blank) on the hood of that police car."

She also says, "Tony said 'this is my dream' and explained he wanted to (blank) two women while he was in uniform."

"Is he being penalized for it," asked Robinson.

"He already retired," replied News 8's Erin Logan.

"Wow, so, he's cut loose and free," Robinson said.

She and other New Britain taxpayers are pretty annoyed that 42-year-old Anthony Paventi's pension package translates to over $50,000 a year.

"For a pension. For what," asked Stephano Sandiford. "For doing what? For serving the community and not helping people do what they're supposed to?"

A Days Inn on the Berlin Turnpike was one of Paventi's popular spots. Investigators found that he rented a room 15 times while on the clock in 18 months, twice while collecting overtime. He even used the police department as his address when checking in.

The hotel is not very far from the home he used to live in with his ex-wife and seven-year-old son.

Neighbors tell us the family has been struggling with this mess and that they are there to support the little boy and his mother.

So do strangers.

"It's hurting me only because I have a daughter," said Robinson. "And to have something like that, a scandal in our community.

"It's not right. It's not right at all, he got caught in something and he should pay for it," said another woman.

Besides the $51,000 in annual pension payments, Paventi will also get health benefits for seven years.

Acting Police Chief Captain James Wardwell called his behavior egregious and troubling.
