WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WTNH) -- Nothing says spring more than daffodils. The American Cancer Society's annual fundraiser is spreading spring cheer by delivering tens of thousands of flowers across the state.
Snow is in the forecast, but peeking out of some boxes are signs of spring; daffodils destined for delivery because Hope Springs Eternal.
"The daffodil is the symbol of hope and for our cancer patients that's what we like to show them is hope," said Stephanie Balasano, American Cancer Society.
Volunteers are unpacking 30,000 flowers, sorting them as part of the American Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days Campaign.
Bunches serving as a thank you to donors, also as a fundraiser for research and a bright spot for cancer patients.
"Who doesn't like getting flowers or bears," said John Harrington, volunteer. "And, ya know, definitely the orders that go directly to cancer patients are great as well."
So the bunches in the boxes don't look like much, after all they are just buds, but that is the point. The goal is when they are delivered, the daffodils will then bloom giving the recipient more time to enjoy them and think spring.
The bouquets will arrive courtesy of FedEx, and for drivers who deliver everything from surf boards to skates, this is a special delivery.
"This is a special day and they do look forward to it," said Joseph Ferolano, FedEx Operations Manager.
With the forecast for snow, getting a box of bright yellow flowers to mark the Vernal Equinox may renew belief in the promise of spring.
