HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut residents adversely affected by Superstorm Sandy will have some extra time to register for federal assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended its deadline from Dec. 31 to Jan. 28.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said extending the registration deadline will ensure that any resident or business affected by the October storm has ample time to apply for help.

To date, he said more than $20 million has been approved to help Connecticut residents with disaster-related expenses.

According to Malloy's office, about 11,400 residents of Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven and New London counties, as well as the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribal Nation, have registered for federal assistance.

Residents can find more information at www.ct.gov.sandy .
