Newington, Conn. (WTNH) - No one as hurt after an explosion and fire destroyed a condominium in Newington early Thursday.
The fire was reported around 3:30 a.m. at a complex on Churchill Drive.
Witnesses told News 8 there was an explosion in a garage that blew off the garage and interior door. A Corvette inside the garage caught fire the flames spread to the unit.
"I heard an explosion and I woke up. I looked out and didn't see anything and then I heard somebody banging on the doors," said Peggy Jiantonio.
The condo owner was able to get out safely and alert others to the fire.
Mutual aid was requested from nearby towns to help make sure the fire didn't spread to the roof.
"With extension to the upper floors, the fire gained in intensity and obviously, as you can see with the unit, it got all the way to the top floor," said Asst. Chief Tom Lapierre, Newington Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
