SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) -- Improperly disposed of ashes may be the cause of a fire at a home in South Windsor Friday.

The fire was reported at a home on Pleasant Valley Road shortly before 4:00 a.m. It started in a garage and spread to the house.

According to authorities, there was a trash can between the house and the garage which contained the ashes. Investigators suspect the can ignited and the garage caught fire.

The house and the garage are six feet apart.

Investigators also found two gas cans and a propane tank that were stored nearby that might have contributed to, or gave more strength to, the fire.

The investigation is still ongoing.
