NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH)--  Supporting those directly impacted by the tragedy at Sandy Hook, some of New Britain's finest and bravest are going head to head in a fitness challenge at Roosevelt Middle School.

The event started at 4:00 PM and is scheduled to run until 8 PM Saturday night. There are ten members of the New Britain Police Department going up against six New Britain firefighters.

The winners will get bragging rights, but both teams know they're doing this for a great cause.

The guys are competing in CrossFit style challenges and the audience is cheering them on.

Donations collected at the door will all benefit the Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund that was started by the University of Connecticut foundation.

Three team members compete in each of eight different challenges. Events like strongman competitions, power lifting and endurance workouts. Each competitor is timed, weights and distances are measured, and in the end, only one team will come out on top.

Both departments say they had tremendous support for this event and it's a great way to bring the community together.

All of the proceeds will go to help pay for college costs of the siblings of the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings.
