HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Hartford has a new police chief and he's a familiar face to those on the force.

Interim Chief James Rovella will take over the job permanently later this month.

Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra made the announcement at City Hall late Tuesday afternoon.

Rovella has served as the acting chief since Daryl Roberts retired in December. He was considered the frontrunner for the job, even though he never formally applied.

The search for a new police chief cost the city $50,000.

Rovella will officially shed the "interim" label on July 18th.
