New Britain, Conn. (WTNH) - Police have arrested a man responsible for a shooting that put the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain under lockdown Wednesday evening.
SWAT teams, K9 units, police helicopters, and emergency personnel were all on the scene.
"My daughter was there," said David Dalton, "they say it was somebody working in the basement, shot the supervisor and another person."
Rumor quickly turned to fact. Police say 65-year-old Victor Valcarcel Sr. opened fire on co-workers Lynn Trask and Robert Barucci.
"There was a disciplinary dispute today, so he was currently employed," said Lynn Ricci, VP Administration Hospital of Special Care. "Our focus has been on the safety of our patients and concern for our employees."
Staff doctors tended to the two victims who were taken to St. Francis Hospital in serious, but stable condition. Valcarcel was later arrested.
"The shooter was not located in the building, but he was well known, he is a person that works on the hospital," said New Britain Police Chief. "Had a dispute with supervisor, pulled a gun and shot him. At 37 Helen Drive, Victor was arrested and charged with assault and criminal attempt to commit murder."
The hospital went on lockdown. No patients were hurt, and officials say they were never in danger, but the drama and the trauma many experienced is sure to linger long after the final police car pulls away.
"We worrying because we heard so many things with colleges and schools," one person said. "We thought it was something like that."
For those who lives nearby the hospital, it was a scene straight out of the movies. Folks in one New Britain neighborhood reportedly saw the suspect being handcuffed by police.
Valcarcel was arrested on nearby Helen Dr., and he did not put up a struggle.
Mike Diaz, who lives just a few houses down from where Valcarcel was apprehended, was shocked by the incident.
"I don't really know the guy," Diaz said. "Even to know that we have a guy over here that's a suspect is a little scary."
