HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Two Connecticut legislative leaders are raising concerns about baby products that contain toxic flame retardants and are considering legislation, including a possible state ban.
State Rep. Diana Urban of North Stonington and Sen. Terry Gerratana of New Britain on Thursday cited a new report from the Seattle-based Washington Toxics Coalition. The group found toxic flame retardants in 17 of 20 new baby and children's products it tested. The list included bassinet pads, nursing pillow, changing pads and car seats.
The lawmakers, co-chairwomen of the legislature's Select Committee on Children, said the chemicals have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption and other health effects.
Gerrantana said it was "surprising and alarming" that products with the toxic flame retardants are still being sold.
The General Assembly convenes Feb. 8.
