NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Church Street in Newington is closed while officials investigate reports of a gas odor.

Firefighters believe a lightning strike may have been behind the odor of natural gas on Church Street after a lightning bolt hit a tree and then jumped to a nearby building.

Utility crews are testing the area to make sure the strike didn't affect any of the gas lines.

Church Street is closed between New Britain Avenue and Patriot Lane as a pre-caution.
