New Haven (WTNH) - Thirteen Connecticut post offices are under consideration for possible closure as the U.S. Postal Service looks for ways to save money.

Zip Code 06515 may not have a post office by the end of the year.

"I live up the street and it's very convenient, and it's just easy to get to," said April Massey of New Haven, "so it will be a bad thing if they close it."

The post office station on Fountain Street in the Westville section of New Haven has been here for more than 70-years, long before e-mail.

"Everyone there is so friendly," Melissa Bernardo of New Haven said. "Sometimes it's just cold talking to a computer."

A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service told News Channel 8 there are 150 stand alone post offices in Connecticut, but the smaller satellite offices like Westville are the ones being looked at. Here is the list of offices under consideration:

Bridgeport:

  • Barnum Station
  • Nobel Station

Hartford-area:

  • Blue Hills station
  • Old State House Station
  • East Hartford Branch
  • West Hartford Branch

New Haven:

  • Kilby Station
  • Westville Station
  • Trolley Square Branch (East Haven)
  • Baybrook Station (West Haven)
  • Mount Carmel Carrier Annex (Hamden)

Stamford:

  • Glenbrook Station
  • West Avenue Station

Postal offices want to consolidate to save money. They say their losses are estimated at some $6 billion. They'll look at how much money is generated, whether the lease is up and how much the community uses the office, before making a decision on closing.

"I'm sure they'll be nervous. Anyone would be with losing their job, especially in this economy and everything," Stephanie Mallard of New Haven said.

"Today I had my credit card bill and I feel safer putting it right into the post office rather than into a box," Mary Haddei of Hamden said.

A final list of post offices that will close probably won't be out until the fall.
