Lawyers for a former Central Connecticut State University student have asked the state Appellate Court to rule that she did not plagiarize another student's term paper.

Attorneys for Cristina Duquette of Watertown argued before the Appellate Court on Tuesday. They asked the judges to overturn what they called a flawed ruling last year by Waterbury Superior Court Judge Jane Scholl.

Duquette insists the other student, Matthew Coster, copied her paper on the Holocaust. But Scholl determined that Duquette was the cheater and ordered her to pay Coster nearly $28,000 in punitive damages.

The Appellate Court did not immediately issue a ruling.

Coster was expelled from Central in 2006 after school officials accused him of copying Duquette's paper. He has been readmitted.
