Hartford (WTNH) - Now, with Governor Rell announcing she will not run for re-election, more politicians are considering their options. One of the leading Democrats in the state has so far stayed out of the fray. Today, the Attorney General talked about health care and what his plans might be.

It was a packed crowd at Gateway Community College in New Haven. And, most of the questions geared toward Attorney General Richard Blumenthal were centered around the health care crisis.

"We have a non-existent systeWilm of health care insurance regulation. We have laws that are totally inadequate," Attorney General Blumenthal said.

Attorney General Blumenthal said he has gone head-to-head with insurance companies over denying coverage and believes there should be reform including a public option.

"I'm disappointed that one of our United States senators seems to be against the public option that most people in Connecticut seem to feel is absolutely vital," he said.

That senator is Joe Lieberman who has made headlines for siding with Republicans against the President's Health Care bill.

So all this may not be coincidence.

But, for now, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said he is planning to run for Attorney General in 2010 but Lieberman's seat in 2012.

"It would be a challenge that I would welcome if it were the right tie to do it and I thought I could make a difference," he said.

Quinnipiac Professor Scott McLean said Attorney General Blumenthal has had opportunities to run for the state house and the senate and hasn't; he said he is not a risk-taker.

"He wants to get the best possible shot at the U.S. senate and I think he's getting ready to do it," McLean said.

But is it too soon to even speculate?

"You have to start running for these offices more and more early," McLean said.

McLean predicts that if Lieberman runs for re-election, he'll do it as a Republican which essentially would leave the Democratic ticket open.

"Stay tuned," Attorney General Blumenthal said.
