SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Concerned parents are speaking out after hazardous chemicals were found inside two Southington schools.
School Superintendent Joseph Erardi Jr. hosted a public hearing Wednesday night to go over the the findings and answer parents questions.
PCBs were found in the caulking around windows, doors and other areas at both Kennedy and DePaolo Middle Schools.
The schools are about to undergo an $85 million renovation project and the discovery was made during an environmental testing. The schools plan to remove all the PCBs during remediation next summer.
"I think you have to weigh the risks of not doing it, versus the risks of cleaning it up," said Lucile Lew, mother. "And you have to think of the impact on the kids' health and the people who work here."
The school district says the buildings are 100 percent safe for kids to be in. They say the air quality is the most important factor and that all air tests came back negative.
