An Enfield man shot and killed himself after a standoff that lasted for hours Wednesday night.
News 8 is told the man, identified as 54-year-old Denis Boucher, a corrections officer, was coming home from work, went into his house and began loading a gun. His wife then left the home.
"The husband did come home from work, appeared intoxicated, went into a closet and pulled out a rifle," Chief Carl Sferrazza said, "She watched him load the rifle with the rounds. She was alarmed, left the house and called us. Officers responded immediately, secured the perimeter to ensure that he stayed in the house and didn't go outside."
A SWAT team was on the scene at Circle Drive, near Shaker Road. Residents were told to stay inside, go to the basement and stay away from the windows.
Police believe that beforehand there was a car accident that he was involved in, and that Boucher had drove away from the scene.
When police finally entered the home, they found Boucher dead from a gunshot wound.
The incident is under investigation.
