Possible police impersonation in South Windsor

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police are investigating a possible police impersonation that happened in South Windsor on New Year's Eve.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., on I-291, in the Bissell Bridge area.

A young woman told police that she had been stopped by a black Chevy Impala with flashing red/blue lights behind the windshield. The vehicle did not have any front license plate or markings.

"By statute in Connecticut, in order to be an emergency vehicle, you must have both lights and an audible device, typically a siren," said Sgt. Scott Custer of the South Windsor PD.

The woman said the driver then approached her car and requested her license and registration. The man asked her a few questions, told her she was beautiful, then gave her back her papers and returned to his car.

According to police, the woman said the suspect vehicle continued to follow her on Route 5 and Sullivan Ave.

"She drove off, he drove off and followed her for a period of time, several miles, in fact, through streets of South Windsor. She was very wise, went through shopping plazas until the vehicle stopped following her. She then returned home and later called the police," St. Custer said.

Police said there is no record of the woman's registration or license being run by a police agency.

The woman described the suspect as a light-skinned man, about 5'10" tall, medium build, wearing dark jeans, a black shirt and black hooded sweatshirt. He was also wearing some type of badge on a chain around his neck and had a handgun on his hip.

If it's not a black-and-white, and you still don't trust the lights, the badge and the lack of a siren. Call 911 because when police say they want to protect and serve, they don't pretend to do it, they mean it.

"Notify them of where you are, that you're being stopped and that you're not comfortable with it," said Sgt. Custer.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the South Windsor Police at 860-644-2551.
