Newington, Conn. (WTNH) - A puppy stolen from an animal shelter in Newington has been returned.
The Connecticut Humane Society says that reports on News 8 helped lead to the return of Sherlock the Scottish terrier.
"Sometimes these stories don't have a happy ending and in this case it does have a happy ending, and in this case we want people to use this as an example that it really pays to be proactive in helping animals,” said spokeswoman Alicia Wright.
Sherlock is now back safe and sound after police say someone took the young puppy last week from the whelping room in the back of the Humane Society’s shelter.
He was missing for about a week and then police launched an investigation.
Wednesday morning someone dropped Sherlock off behind a veterinarian hospital in a crate and then called it in.
Police consider this an active case and they are looking to make an arrest.
"The good citizens in the community, and especially your report, was very helpful," Alicia Wright commented.
News 8: “Are you surprised you got him back?”
Alicia Wright: “Not surprised at all. People love animals and I think people want to do what is best for the animals. And I think this just spoke to the hearts of people who love the animals we help."
Sherlock won't be available for adoption until after he is given a physical examination, but he is very popular and the Humane Society is receiving a lot of calls.
