Southington, Conn. (WTNH) - There is plenty of snow in Connecticut not because of mother nature, but thanks to several snow guns. However, with temperatures rising this week, it's unclear how long the snow will stay for skiing.
Fresh snow and wide open trails. They are open at Mount Southington.
"Our snow makers have done a great job considering the weather," said Steven Positano, Mt. Southington, "we've done everything we can and we've made snow the past two nights."
The seemingly non-existent winter has been tough on the local ski slope. It needs to be 22 degrees to make snow, though the fact that it's been a season of man-made stuff doesn't bother skiers or snowboarders.
"It's pretty exciting to go skiing because haven't normally been going cause of the snow," said Ellie Miller, of Guilford, "there's not much snow."
"We didn't really have a snowy winter this year," said Spence Henske, of Westport. "I think all the snow got wasted last year."
Spence and his mom were spending the day on the slopes. Usually for his school vacation week they head north, but with a similar lack of snow up there they decided to stay close to home.
"We heard the conditions were so bad we didn't want to spend the money to be out there," said Stacey Henske, "so we thought we would stay local."
Adding insult to this upcoming week of mild weather is the cancellation of many school vacations. Normally the slopes would be teaming with teens, youngsters and parents, but many Connecticut kids are in school this week, leaving lots of room for those who do have the day off.
When asked if it was a good day for skiing Guilford resident Molly McCann replied, "probably in the morning because the snow isn't going to get slushy until the afternoon."
As long as there is snow on the ground Mount Southington will be open for snowboarding and skiing.
