HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The state Department of Children and Families has scrapped the honor system for free meals at the psychiatric hospital in Middletown.

The Republican-American reports that the agency changed the policy after state auditors investigated a complaint that some agency employees were getting free meals to which they were not entitled.

The Auditors of Public Accounts found the cafeteria staff at Riverview had no procedures to determine if hospital workers are eligible for free meals.

Hospital policy says meals are free if employees supervise or care for patients. All other employees are required to purchase a meal ticket.
