BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A neighborhood in Berlin was put on edge when a suspicious package was found in a yard Sunday evening.

The package was found on Worthington Ridge shortly before 4:30 p.m.  Several police agencies responded to the scene to investigate a shoe box that was thrown onto the lawn.  According to the homeowner, Janice Versahi, the box was wrapped around with tape and had some black circles around it.  "I don't know, someone's sending a message," Versahi said.

Police told News 8 that while the package seemed to be threatening, there was nothing inside the box that posed a threat to neighbors.

"Not knowing what was in it, the state police went in and examined it and found nothing things that were non-explosive and wouldn't harm the family or neighborhood," Lt. Jim Gosselin said.

While the situation wasn't dangerous, it was the last thing the neighborhood needed.  There have been about four or five burglaries in the past two months in the same neighborhood.

Gosselin said the police department has been stepping up patrols in the area and is investigating each burglary that occurred, along with searching for whoever dropped the package.
