Talk to boost the highway speed limits

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Talks are on the table to boost the speed limit on state highways. The current limit is 65 mph but that could go up to 75.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 35 states have a speed limit of 70 or higher. Should Connecticut bring that stastic up to three dozen?

"It's not really a good idea. People drive crazy like it is. If they drive faster, they're going to go above the speed limit no matter what," said Mark Greene, a trucker.

"The roads are too congested, and we're on the roads all the time," said Don Houle.

Democratic Representative Minnie Gonzalez has proposed a bill that increases the speed limit on highways to 75 mph.

"I think it's a good idea for most of the highways. Some of them they shouldn't go above 65 but on Route 91, it should be 75," said Steve Bozek.

"If you put it at 75, they will go faster," said Chuck Gibbs.

A 2005 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed reductions in speed limits reduce vehicle speeds and crashes while increases in speed limits increase speed, as well as crashes.

"No, it's too fast. 75 isn't too fast, but if you put it at 75 they're going to go 80-85," said Houle.

"They're just going to end up having more accidents and doing dumber stuff. I ain't being funny but it wasn't even snowing that hard and I seen people in a ditch, what does that mean? You are going too damn fast," said Greene.
