SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) -- Two physical education instructors were struck by a car near the entrance to South Windsor High School, police said.
It happened just before 8:00 a.m. on Nevers Road, near the school's driveway and Community Center.
"Both pedestrians are injured and are being transported to area hospitals for treatment," Sgt. Scott Custer said in a statement.
Brendan McClay of West Hartford and James Warnock of Somersault were the two who were struck.
"Everyone outside of the school heard about it first, then all the teachers got the email and then they all shared it with the students, and then the principal announced it over the intercom," Briana Stavola, a student at South Windsor High School, said.
The driver of the car, Keith Huppe, 19, who hit the two stayed at the scene. Huppe was not a student. He may have not seen the pedestrians because of the glare from the sun, police said.
It is believed that Huppe was dropping off his sister at school before the incident happened.
"This time of day, between 7 and 8 AM, the sun rises over the ridge to the east, which is the direction this driveway tends to head, so when you come down that driveway this time of morning, this time of year, the sun is right in your eyes," Chief Matthew Reed, told News 8. "Both faculty members were on the ground, they were injured. One appeared to have a head injury that had potential of being significant."
Hopefully, school will be far less dramatic on Thursday morning, although Wednesday's series of events will still be talked about.
"The principal just came on the intercom again and said they don't have any new information, they're both in the hospital and they need their rest. I feel so, I feel horrible," Stavola said.
McClay was discharged from the hospital Wednesday. As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, Warnock remained in serious condition.
