NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — Members of the New Britain Board of Education will vote again on a plan that would allow a nonprofit health care provider to distribute condoms to New Britain High School students.
Democratic school board member Aram Ayalon tells the New Britain Herald that the measure stems from the fact that the city has one of the highest levels of teenage pregnancy in Connecticut.
Ayalon also says that New Britain leads in the state in the number of teens having more than one baby.
The school board is expected to vote next month on allowing the Community Health Center of New Britain to give out condoms to high school students. The board voted twice in the past seven years to reject the plan.
Ayalon says a similar measure in force in Hartford, New Haven, Willimantic, New London and elsewhere.
