STRATFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- There's a new alternative for women dealing with hair loss and looking for a non-surgical solution.
Every day is now a good hair day for Abby Schildkraut.
"I love my hair," she said.
It's a new found feeling. A hormone deficiency left her with about 40 percent hair loss.
"I don't have any hair growing back. So the hair that I lost is gone."
Salon owner John Donofrio points to Abby's scalp.
"You can see here, you can see through her scalp and this is probably the thickest part of her hair," he said.
Donofrio owns Jade Salon in Stratford, the first one to offer Evolve Volumizer in the state.
"It's 100 percent human hair," he says.
It's a non-surgical, semi-permanent option for hair loss.
He explains, "It's a silicone base and once it's installed it's literally undetectable. It's just like having your own hair."
The hair piece is attached through a method, similar to crochet.
Donofrio demonstrates, "We'll pull it through and then we go back in and we take another piece of hair and pull that back through."
Secured in place, clients like Abby are smiling. "You don't feel it at all," she said, "you move around, you go swimming, you shower normally, you blow dry your hair."
Another benefit appealing to patients.
Donofrio adds, "If you are recovering from chemotherapy or any other medical illness, you may not want to put chemicals in your hair, color or change the texture of your hair either a perm or hair color."
For women like Joan Rondano, choosing not to have surgery for results, the technique has been a welcomed option.
"There are a lot of hair products out there," she said. "And I've had limited or better yet, little success with them. I have very fine thin hair and it's high maintenance. This is low maintenance compared to what I use to do every single day."
The initial cost is about $1,000.
It should last a year though and does require maintenance.
