WTNH-- Flu cases are still on the rise this winter here in Connecticut. As of the latest report from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the flu is still considered widespread for the state.
Roughly 2,460 people have tested positive for the flu in Connecticut. It is early to see so many cases of the virus, since flu season usually peaks in February or March.
The State Department of Health just posted its most recent flu stats that show the virus is widespread. Currently, more than 10% of all emergency room visits in Connecticut are flu related. Last year, the number was below 8%.
Below is a breakdown of the highest reported flu cases by county:
FAIRFIELD- 691
NEW HAVEN- 629
HARTFORD- 456
MIDDLESEX- 208
WINDHAM- 179
Nationwide, the flu is widespread in 48 states, making it an "epidemic," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Officials still say the flu shot is the best way to fight the virus. Nearly 130 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed throughout the country.
