Hartford (WTNH) - Two tons of medical supplies, more than 1,000 H1N1 vaccines and hundreds of antibiotics, and it's all free, for anyone in Connecticut without health insurance. Wednesday's one-day clinic at the Hartford Convention Center is hosted by the National Association of Free Clinics.
"We are treating anything you can think of; we will have the H1N1 vaccine, we will be testing for STD's, vision testing and dentists looking at your mouth," said Nicole Lamoureux of Free Clinics.
There will be thousands of volunteers, from doctors and dentists, to nurses and health care practitioners. And, there will be 75 exam rooms in all; it is expected to be a busy day.
"We do injections, give meds, we do lab testing, urine tests, finger sticks, strep tests; truly everything you do in a doctor's office, you can do in there," said Karen Gottlieb of Americares Free Clinic.
And they do it all with no government funding. They rely on volunteers like Laura Dominik, a paramedic from Kansas City. She came to Hartford to help out with the clinic.
"The smiles on people's faces when they get the help they need that's incredible, it's so rewarding," said Dominik.
Not only do the uninsured get diagnosis and treatment, they are also given what they need after the clinic moves on to the next city.
"We always make sure there is a safety net to catch them when they leave here. So they have a doctor to see as well [along with] education," said Dominik.
The free clinic will be open from noon to 7 p.m. on February 3rd.
