NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Volunteers from the Connecticut No Kid Hungry Campaign took to the street of New Britain.
The volunteers handed out flyers to homes and businesses to tell people that there are places to go where a child under 18 can get a free meal.
The summer meals program is federally funded, but a big hurdle is letting people know that food is available .
"The summer meals program helps stretch the family's food budget, their food dollars," explained Dawn Crayco. "You'll hear from the food banks in Connecticut that summer is the hardest time for them for food donations, those are down, the shelves are empty because the kids are out from school. So summer meals helps in that way."
All meals have to meet federal nutrition guidelines.
