Guilford, Conn. (WTNH) - There is now a more gentle way of undergoing one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available -- liposuction. It's water assisted liposuction, and there all kinds of benefits to the patient.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Langdon is the first in Connecticut to introduce the water assisted liposuction. It's a new alternative to the traditional method of suctioning fat cells.
"It's a new form of liposuction that involves the use of a water jet," Dr. Langdon said.
It is not as jarring and forceful, with more gentle moves beneath the skin level.
"The water stream is actually breaking apart the fat cells and preserving the rest of the connective tissues, so the healing is much quicker," Dr. Langdon said.
There's also less swelling and bruising so the results are smoother. Dr. Langdon said the water is actually a local anesthetic solution.
"You could feel the water pressure," one of Dr. Langdon's patients said. "It's very lightly. It's because of the anesthesia that you don't feel that much."
"I had pockets of fat that were just kinda there from childbirth after I had my babies, and no matter how hard I worked out, it just wouldn't come off," the woman, who asked not to be identified, said.
"It feels still a little tender on some spots but I like the shaping of it. It looks good," she said.
There's an even wider application to water assisted lipo.
"Because it is capable of very gently extracting and removing those fat cells, we have even higher quality fat to use for volume augmentation," Dr. Langdon said.
Among the uses for the higher quality fat cells is for breast augmentation. Dr. Langdon said it creates a more natural result.
