Westport, Conn. (WTNH) - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is one of the leading causes of female infertility. A Westport clinic offers comprehensive treatment and they say a major component is healthy eating.
Carolyn Gundell is a nutritionist with Reproductive Medicine Associates. They offer a comprehensive program for PCOS patients in Connecticut.
The risk for diabetes and infertility runs high in women with PCOS.
"Choosing a meal plan that is low in saturated fats, low in trans-fats is going to reduce inflammation. It's going to improve chances of fertility as well," Gundell said. "Look for foods higher in soluble fiber and also foods lower in glycemic index."
PCOS is a genetic condition disorder with symptoms that include being overweight, irregular cycles and excessive hair growth. Fresh fruits and vegetables are must-haves on the grocery list.
"A lot of what changing the diet, changing of activity does, is that it balances out the hormones. It will balance out the male androgens. It will balance out the insulin levels," Gundell explained.
Carolyn says getting on a healthy track will help minimize the use of medications.
