Litchfield, Conn. (WTNH) - A 55-year-old man was killed after crashing into a tree on the Litchfield Green on Saturday morning.

Police said Walter B. Nelson, of 230 Sylvan Ave., Waterbury, was driving southbound on North Street in a 1989 Ford Ranger pickup, when he crossed through the intersection at West Street at a high rate of speed.

Nelson's pickup continued on to the Litchfield Green, sideswiping the Information Center building, and then striking a large tree head on.

Nelson sustained head injuries and severe blunt force trauma to his chest. He was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was unregistered and Nelson's license was suspended.

Police are investigating the accident.
