TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) - Torrington is leading an effort to open a regional animal shelter in western Connecticut.
The Republican-American reports the Litchfield Hills Council of Elected Officials is applying for a state grant to finance a study to determine whether a cooperative would work for Barkhamsted, Colebrook, Harwinton, Goshen, Morris, New Hartford, Norfolk, Winsted and Torrington.
The study, for example, would determine how the towns would pay for staffing.
Torrington needs to upgrade and renovate its animal shelter. Police Chief Michael Maniago says the shelter is taking in more animals and officials want to care for them properly.
A regional animal pound also would ensure staff is available in off-hours for all the towns.
