Essex, Conn. (WTNH) - Two people were killed after a driver went the wrong way on Route 9, causing a head-on collision with another vehicle in Essex Sunday morning.
Both vehicles were crumpled and two Connecticut drivers were dead on the scene. It was a difficult sight for even seasoned state troopers to see.
"It was devastating," said Sgt. Robert Derry. "It was quite a bit of damage, more than I've seen in a long time."
State Police said they don't yet know which vehicle was the wrong-way car, as the impact sent the vehicles in opposite directions.
"Our preliminary investigation indicates that one of the vehicles was traveling the wrong way on Route 9," said Sgt. Derry.
The Nissan Altima came to rest pushed up against the overpass bridge, while the Chrysler PT Cruiser ended up on the opposite side, with the rear dangling over the overpass.
While the crash must have created quite a sound, no one actually called in the accident. A trooper on routine patrol came upon the scene: a highway littered with debris and two drivers motionless inside their vehicles.
"We did not receive any phone calls from any motorists because I think the trooper just missed seeing it happen," said Sgt. Derry.
The driver of the Nissan has been identified as Afzaal Muhammed, 54, of 8 Orchard St., New London.
The driver of the PT Cruiser has been identified as Eunmi Yoon, 28, of 207 North Stonington Rd., Mystic.
Police said there were no passengers in either vehicle.
The accident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to contact Trooper Lanouette at 860-399-2100.
