A false alarm proves costly

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) -- A false alarm cost a lot of time and money Saturday morning when witnesses reported red flares being shot.

Police say that they received several calls about red flares being shot into the air in the Old Kelsey Point Road area. Searches took place throughout the morning, but it was all a false alarm.

A Westbrook firefighter found remains of the flares on the beach, but there was never a boat in distress.

The Coast Guard reminds people that marine flares should only be used in the event of a true emergency.
