MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut police and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents are setting up collection sites across the state where the public can drop off expired and unwanted prescription drugs with no questions asked.
The collection is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at state police offices across the state and other locations. Officials say the goal is to remove expired medication that's potentially dangerous from homes, as well as to prevent pill abuse and theft.
Previous "Prescription Drug Take-Back Days" at thousands of sites across the country have yielded nearly a million pounds of prescription drugs.
Authorities say medicines left unused in homes are highly susceptible to diversion and abuse, and studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family, friends and home medicine cabinets.
