Meriden, Conn. (WTNH) - A new alert system in Connecticut can notify you about emergencies that may affect where you live or work.

A state-wide alert system was unveiled Tuesday at the State Police Training Academy in Meriden. Officials will now be able to notify you through either your cell or home phones, via text messages or via e-mail.

"This system allows people to stay informed, even when you're not at home, even when you're not in your car," Connecticut Homeland Security Commissioner Peter Boynton said.

You must register to receive the alerts.

State officials said this state-wide system is the first of its kind in the country.
