EAST HAMPTON, Conn. (AP) - A review of e-mails appears to contradict claims by officials in a Connecticut town who are defending their ouster of the police chief, who insists he was retaliated against for pursuing sexual harassment complaints filed against the town manager.
The East Hampton Town Council eliminated the police chief's job in June, calling it a cost-saving measure.
Council members say Town Manager Jeffrey O'Keefe began looking at police budget cuts before Police Chief Matthew Reimondo delivered sexual harassment complaints against O'Keefe by three female town workers to the town attorney in April.
But government e-mails show O'Keefe asked for police budget information three days after the complaints were delivered to the town attorney. The complaints were not substantiated.
