Elderly woman rescued from water

CLINTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- An elderly woman was taken to the hospital after being rescued from the water in Clinton Sunday morning.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m.

A caller reported to police that an elderly woman was missing from her home at Sterling Village, which is an elderly housing community.

Police were then told that the woman suffers from dementia, and had just been seen behind #9 Sterling Village, walking on a foot path.

The caller then said a witness had seen the woman leaving the foot path and wading into the water that abuts the properties.

Police said the water is a tributary to the Indian River.

The area is overgrown with vegetation and officials said the woman was not easily spotted upon arrival.

However, they did locate her floating in the water about 25 feet from the bank.

Officers then entered the water and performed a rescue of the woman, who was reportedly despondent.

The woman was treated by members of the Clinton Fire Department and taken to Middlesex Memorial Hospital Shoreline Clinic.

There is no word on the woman's current condition.
