OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) -- With the need so great, the Old Saybrook Fire Department moved up it's annual food drive for the Shoreline Food Kitchen from Fall to Spring.

Old Saybrook, along with eight other volunteer departments held drives from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The goal was to raise about 9,000 pounds of non perishable food items, but the organizer of the drive was confident that the goal would be exceeded because of his community's tremendous commitment to others.

"As bad as the economy is around here, the residents of the shoreline come out like gangbusters," said Max Sabrin. "It's incredible."

The Shoreline Food Kitchen serves 11 towns in southern Connecticut.

You don't have to wait for a food drive to donate though. For more information on how to donate, go to the Shoreline Soup Kitchen's website .
