Centerbrook, Conn. (WTNH) - Geoff Matesky was never one to let a wheelchair get in his way, not since he was paralyzed in a car accident at age 19.
He became a computer engineer, a musician, and then when he married Laura, a step-dad to two young boys Kyle and Kelvin, which is a challenge in itself.
"I began to write the stuff down, funny things down that went on, things nobody would believe," Geoff said.
You could call the stories 'adventures in step-parenting from a wheechair' but he titled his book "They Call Me Wheels" and turned it into a memoir.
"I want people to read it and be entertained, and see life from a different perspective I suppose," Geoff said.
The book also looks to dispel myths about what, uh, works when you are paralyzed from the chest down. Kaid is Laura and Geoff's five year old biological child.
"Where the odds may have been slim, it was just this unbelievable surprise," Geoff said.
In fact, it took three positive pregnancy tests before they did believe it. When she and Geoff got together more than ten years ago Laura said she didn't see what others saw.
"I don't care about that wheelchair whatsoever," she said. "I care that we are communicating and spiritually connected." And that he is a good father to their kids.
"The great thing is, they are all my sons," Geoff said.
Laura says she hopes people look -- or read the book -- and learn.
"Maybe by watching us, you will see you can do things in your life that you never thought you could do," she said.
"They Call Me Wheels" is available online on iuniverse.com , Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com .
Matesky is working on a sequel.
