MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) --A woman is asking News 8 for help because every six months she has a problem getting food-stamps.

News 8 recently spoke with an Old Saybrook couple who had trouble getting food-stamps. They have a disabled child, and limited income. Their food cabinets were almost empty when News 8 took a look.

Paula Pesapane of Middletown said the redetermination form she signed and sent in to the Department of Social Services in October wasn't approved until December.

"It took two months, and between that time I got two letters saying that they were going to deny me," said Pesapane.

She couldn't get in touch with her case worker by phone or email.

"And when I did get a hold of someone they go well we didn't get any paperwork from you and in the meantime, I faxed it to them twice as well, so it's hard," said Pesapane.

Pesapane contacted News 8 after seeing the Silvestri family in Old Saybrook face the same delays with the SNAP program. Once News 8 got involved, the Department of Social Services reinstated the food-stamps for the Silvestri family, and their disabled daughter.

News 8 also told DSS about Pesapane's situation. Today she received a letter confirming her eligibility for food-stamps until next October. The agency continues to try to improve service.

"Definitely I don't have to go through pulling my hair out for the next couple of nights waiting to see what happens," said Pesapane.

Even with the confirmation letter, Pesapane has to renew eligibility every six months.

"They would never have gotten to me in time like the way with you guys helping," said Pesapane.

News 8 will keep in contact with Pesapane to see if she has any problems with the DSS issuing her food- stamps.
