OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) -- Plenty of people heeded Tuesday's warnings about the weather. And some were out 'battening down the hatches' before things got too rough.

Tuesday afternoon the sounds of an angry sea could be heard at Between the Bridges Marina in Old Saybrook, and when the wind picks up and the tide rises so does the threat to the boats, which has boat owners preparing for the storm. Adding lines and tightening up the ones already holding them in place.

"That's important you don't want it pile driving into the dock," said Ben Grant, boater. "That's all you can do is make sure your lines are tight."

Grant plans to check on his boat every couple of hours. He also wants to make sure other boats stay secure.

"You don't want them breaking loose because that could tear you up pretty badly if somebody else's boat breaks loose," said Grant. "It's happened here before."

The storm is expected to come from the south, which means right up the Connecticut River. And that's why the boats in the most vulnerable spots on the south side of the dock and the outside have been pulled.

Most have been moved to safer slips in more protected areas of the marina. Frank DeLoreto says heavy rains also pose a serious threat.

"When the rain comes we'll be watching folks boats to make sure they're not sinking, taking water inside the boat," said Frank DeLoreto, Between the Bridges Marina, "because they'll sink from the inside just as fast as they will from the outside."

DeLoreto plans on being at the marina for the duration.
