Student refers to Wesleyan frat as "rape factory"

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A former student has filed a lawsuit against Wesleyan University. In court documents, she accuses one fraternity as being a "rape factory."

It's terrifying what a woman says went on at the Wesleyan Beta Theta Pi House. She says she was locked in a room here and raped by a man visiting the college.

And even though a man has been convicted for the crime, now the school is in the spotlight and News 8 went to Wesleyan Tuesday to see what students thought about the latest lawsuit.

"For her to press a lawsuit about that I think it's completely ridiculous," said Jack, senior.

"I really wish Wesleyan had taken more action against the people involved," said Roxanna Pell, sophomore.

In court documents, she isn't identified, but says student health services were closed and she wasn't able to report the rape until the next day.

Plus, she says the school didn't do anything when other students began to intimidate her outside her dorm once she came forward.

Lastly, she says the school never told her the frat's reputation: a reputation she describes as a "rape factory."

"I know them all on a really personal level and they're not the kind of people that would do something like that," Jack said.

"I definitely think in that kind of environment, there are a lot of teenagers, everybody's young, anything can happen," Pell said. "So, it can be dangerous."

"They throw parties where it's really crowded, but that's the only reason why I don't go there," one Wesleyan student said. "I don't feel unsafe there."

The school put out a statement saying that they can't comment on pending litigation, but Wesleyan takes matters concerning sexual assault very seriously and has dedicated resources to deal with this important issue.

An issue that may now play out in court.
