Woman killed while crossing the street

Durham, Conn. (WTNH) - State police say a woman was killed while trying to cross a street in Durham.

Police say 69-year old Joan Leighton-Smith was crossing Route 17 Wednesday afternoon near Route 147 when she was hit by a pick-up truck.

Police have charged the driver, 57-year old Irving Johnston, with driving under the influence.  

He was released on a 500 dollar bond and is due in court next week.
