Construction to begin on $7M project at base

EAST GRANBY, Conn. (AP) - Construction is set to begin on a new operations center and training facility at the Bradley Air National Guard base.

Groundbreaking for the nearly $7 million project is scheduled for Thursday at the base in East Granby. Governor M. Jodi Rell says it will not only help the men and women who serve in the Connecticut Air National Guard but also create jobs at a critical time.

The facilities will include a 19,400-square-foot operations building for the 103rd Air Operations Group and a second building that will house the unit's day-to-day leadership and administrative functions.

The federal Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted in 2005 to remove 15 A-10 Thunderbolt jets from the base, but the state won a fight to keep a presence at the base with cargo planes replacing the fighter jets.
