Navy seeks cause of subs' peeling hull coating

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - The Navy is trying to determine why portions of specialized hull coating have peeled off several Virginia class submarines.

The coating absorbs sonar waves and makes the subs difficult for sonar to detect.

The Navy told the Daily Press that three Virginia class submarines have experienced major hull coating failures over a period of several years. The problem has occurred to a lesser extent on other Virginia class subs.

Capt. Michael Jabaley says the submarines' performance hasn't been affected.

The submarines are built in a partnership between Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Newport News shipyard and General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.

Northrop deferred questions to Electric Boat and the Navy. Electric Boat also deferred questions to the Navy.
