Ansonia, Conn. (WTNH) - Connecticut Veterans in need of assistance can get help with the basic necessities today in Ansonia.
The Veterans Administration estimated there were 107,000 homeless veterans on any given night in America, and there are around 3,000 vets homeless here in Connecticut. Organizations like No Vet Left Behind are working to change that outcome and make life a little easier for homeless veterans.
As part of Operation Standdown, every year the group packs a building with the stuff vets -- homeless or not -- need; stuff like tents, sleeping bags, blankets, thermals, socks, gloves, hats, scarves. They call it the essentials to go camping in a blizzard.
There are also doctors, dentists, lawyers and counselors to help the veterans.
It's all donated by folks wanting to help out. Last year, they served hundreds of vets in need. This year they hope they have to serve fewer, but they are ready for as many vets who could use some cold weather gear.
The event starts at 7:00 a.m. and runs through 5:00 p.m. at the Ansonia Armory at the corner of State and North Cliff Street.
