New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - The party ended early overnight for some club-goers in New Haven. New Haven police shut down Elevate Lounge on Crown Street for numerous violations.
SWAT team members accompanied by fire marshals and liquor control agents inspected the nightclub Friday night and identified numerous violations, including under-aged drinkers.
Two students were arrested and one was Tazed after police say he struck an officer.
"I have a friend who got Tazed,” said Jeff Nowak of New Haven. “And they do go a little crazy with the Tazer, as far as I'm concerned."
The Yale Daily News reported at least five Yale students were arrested.
"Just before the Morse-Ezra Stiles college screw was set to end early Saturday morning, more than a dozen New Haven police officers and liquor agents entered the downtown nightclub where the event took place," the Yale Daily News reported.
"Five students were arrested," Dean of Student Affairs Marichal Gentry said in an e-mail to the Yale College community Saturday morning.
Interviewed at the scene early Saturday morning,Yale Daily News says New Haven Assistant Chief of Operations Ariel Melendez said the police in no way acted inappropriately and that the operation had been announced ahead of time as part of “Operation Nightlife."
“We announced we were coming out last weekend, and this weekend,” Melendez said.
"Operation Nightlife" was initiated after gun violence erupted on College and Crown streets two weeks ago after nightclubs closed. NHPD says officers will be back out night after night, weekend after weekend to make sure the under-aged drinking stops and the streets stay safe.
