NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Not many little kids give away all of their birthday presents, but a six-year-old girl from East Haven did. However, it's the way she came up with the idea that makes it even more impressive.
Six-year-old Kara Sheldon asked for 50 pairs of shoes for her birthday. That request came quite a while ago.
"She reminded us almost every month," Kristal Sheldon, Kara's mother said laughing.
"I saw it on TV, they were donating it to the orphanage, and my mom told me to donate it to the hospital," Kara said.
"I believe it was the Disney Channel and it talked about a girl that had collected shoes for her birthday," Sheldon said.
Kara was determined to follow her lead.
"I said honey, you understand that you're not going to get gifts, right? She said, 'Mommy, I have so many toys and there are children who don't have mommy's and daddy's," Sheldon said.
So, all of the shoes, her birthday presents, are now waiting to be worn by patients at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.
Staff there are very appreciative.
"The staff here will identify who the children are in need and the correct sizes and we'll hook them up with the right shoes," said Ellen Good, Yale-New Haven Hospital.
"How did that make you feel," News 8's Erin Logan asked.
"Pretty good," Kara replied.
She got a little bashful when it came time to brag.
"I told a little bit of my classroom," she said.
There are all sizes, girls and boys, from sandals, to sneakers, patent leather boots; there's quite the selection.
Size nine, that would go to about a six-year-old girl. If six-year-old Erin Logan had seen one specific pair of purple shoes, she says those are the pair she would've grabbed.
"She really liked pink and purple," said Good.
"So, she liked the ones I liked," asked Logan.
"I think she liked the ones you liked," Good said.
"Did you like the purple," asked Logan.
"Yeah, and a lot of people liked the ladybug," Kara said.
"I guess so. I keep hearing you say the ladybug," said Logan.
