NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- New Haven has an academic and social enrichment program for kids, called LEAP.

The LEAP program kicked off a community barbeque on Friday in four of the city's toughest neighborhoods. LEAP operates for kids year-round.

Organizers held the barbecues to inform residents about the program and to reach out to the families who are already involved.

"One of the unique things about LEAP is that we actually live in the neighborhoods that we serve," said a representative , "so we really see ourselves as a partner. Not as an outsider coming in telling you this is what you need to do, but really as a partner in your child's development, to become successful citizens.

LEAP has been a staple in the New Haven community for 21 years.
