A sobering demonstration hits home

SEYMOUR, Conn. (WTNH) -- A sobering scene shows teenagers the reality of drinking and driving as student celebrations step-up this time of year.
        
Kids from Seymour and Oxford High Schools stepped into an outdoor classroom to at they are going to learn is something they hopefully never have to go through, but also something they will never forget.

The students took in the scene of a demonstration and dramatization of a multi-car accident involving teens, caused by a drunk driver.

While rescuers put forth extreme effort, the audience stood, somewhat shocked, taking in the scene.

Juniors and seniors from Seymour and Oxford High Schools watched their classmates being tended to in a real life-like disaster.

"When you see this it's scary," said Will Denzlow. "It's reality comparing to what they are telling ya."

I think it's beneficial for all of us. Especially because we all have our licenses, or are getting our license," said Allie Caple. "This is something we really need to see."

The students also need to understand the commitment and the resources it takes to properly execute this type of rescue.

"Like you don't think of many things, like how many people are needed, the manpower, the money that is needed and then you think about what the families must be going through," said James Badas.

The message has struck a nerve, drinking and driving, texting and driving are dangerous and deadly. At least one student says things will be different for him.
 
"I've been in this situation before. I'm going to try my best and avoid this all these situations," Mike Conlan said.
